Membership at Bethel
Why Become a Member?
Have you ever wondered why churches ask people to make a formal “commitment” to become a member of a particular congregation when they already belong to Christ and His Church?
Like it or not, the answer is more sociological than Biblical. Even though we read about the “church of Ephesus” or the “church of Philadelphia” in the Bible, there’s no indication that a person went through membership orientation classes to become part of a particular congregation. However, since believers in England cannot logistically enjoy fellowship with believers in Peru, it is necessary that Christ followers organize themselves in local congregations where people actually live.
What then is the value of membership in the local church if it is not required in Scripture?
Consider the following benefits that a member commitment identifies with regard to the mission and character of a particular congregation as it seeks to answer God's call in the larger scheme of the Kingdom:
1. Membership fosters a deeper sense of kinship in relationships. A commitment to relationships with others encourages the development of friendships where people are less likely to get "lost in the crowd."
2. Membership gives a sense of belonging which fosters an attitude of, "we're in this together and together we can make a difference as fellow disciples of Jesus Christ."
3. Membership helps other members know how to relate to “me” as a Christian who is committing to the mission of and relationship with an established body of believers.
4. Membership in a local congregation outwardly demonstrates to others that I am part of Christ's Universal Church right where I live.
While the benefits stated above may be favorable reasons for membership in the local church they cannot insure that relationships will automatically develop any more than they can magically impart some special status in the body of Christ. Nevertheless, it is our prayer that the benefits of membership outlined above will help to clarify the positive impact a membership commitment has on relationships within your local church.
